First released in 1995, MpegXtra is a product that gives developers using Director and Authorware the power to easily incorporate MPEG and MPEG2 videos into their multimedia products. MPEG is a multi-platform video compression standard that provides 30 frames per second high quality video directly from a hard disk or CD-ROM. MPEG technology is evolving rapidly and it's considered the standard for video compression on the industry. MPEG2 is the native video format for DVD media, and is gaining wide support from several vendors.
MpegXtra uses the MCI interface supported by the majority of MPEG players to provide industry-standard MPEG playback capabilities to Director and Authorware, making it compatible with a wide range of software and hardware based MPEG decoders. It is important to notice that the MCI interface is being replaced by DirectShow, the new API supported by Microsoft for media playback control. We recommend evaluation of DirectMediaXtra if you want to support MPEG playback through DirectShow.
